Mr Ferguson is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon with a specialist interest in minimally invasive (‘keyhole’) surgery including both laparoscopic and robotic surgery.  Having grown up in Bath, he graduated with Honours from Cardiff University, and undertook his surgical training within the West Midlands. He achieved an MD by Research from Birmingham University on the topic of Vaccine Treatments for Colorectal Cancer, and undertook a visiting surgical fellowship to Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada, to consolidate his experience in the management of complex inflammatory bowel disease. He was also President of the Dukes' Club, the National Organisation for Colorectal Surgeons in Training.

He was appointed as a Consultant in General & Colorectal Surgery in 2018. His NHS Practice is at Warwick Hospital (part of South Warwickshire University Foundation Trust), where he routinely performs major bowel surgery for cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. He was pivotal in the introduction of Robotic Surgery at Warwick Hospital in mid-2023, and became the Hospital's first trained robotic surgeon.  He is also a skilled diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopist with excellent patient comfort & satisfaction scores.

 

His expertise has been Nationally recognised through invitations to speak at both academic and clinical conferences.

Research 

Formal Research Roles

Mr Ferguson was awarded an MD by Research from the University of Birmingham in 2015.

His Thesis was on the subject of Therapeutic anti-endothelial vaccines in Colorectal Cancer.

He takes an active part in current surgical clinical trials and is Local Primary Investigator for a number of trials running at South Warwickshire University Foundation Trust

Publications

Mr Ferguson has published extensively in the field of colorectal surgery and surgical training, with over 40 peer Reviewed Publications.

He holds a personal H-index of 13.

He continues to act as an expert article reviewer for a number of respected surgical journals, including the British Journal of Surgery (BJS), the International Journal of Surgery (IJS) and the Journal of Robotic Surgery.
